Temple History

The Anegundi Durga Devi Temple is a timeless sanctuary, radiating divine energy and sacred devotion through the ages. Its history is woven with legends that span the great epochs of Hindu mythology.

In the Self-Manifested (Swayambhu) Manvantara, the revered Mata Sati Devi immolated herself, an event that shook the cosmos. In the aftermath, Lord Shiva retreated into profound penance, filling the universe with the silent power of dharma and devotion.

During the Treta Yuga, it is said that Vali, the mighty vanara king of Ramayana fame, visited this sacred site to offer his devotions to Mata Durga, honoring her strength and benevolence. In the Dwapara Yuga, even the revered Pandavas, during their period of exile, sought the blessings of the Goddess here, performing rituals with unwavering faith and reverence.

As Kali Yuga dawned and the Vijayanagara Empire rose to glory, the great sage Sri Vidyaranya Swamiji graced this site with his divine vision. Recognizing its spiritual significance, he revitalized the worship of Mata Durga here, establishing this temple as a beacon of dharma. Under his blessings, the foundation of the Vijayanagara kingdom was ceremonially sanctified at Anegundi.

Today, the Anegundi Durga Devi Temple stands as a living testament to faith, power, and spiritual harmony, drawing millions of devotees who seek divine guidance, strength, and inner peace. Every stone, pillar, and ritual echoes a legacy that spans millennia, making this sacred site a true jewel of India’s spiritual heritage.
